Endocrine System
This system performs several functions in the proper development of the human body. As labeled in the picture, there are major glands and organs that contribute to the system.
Functions of the System
To regulate:
Functions of Major Components
Adrenal glands
These glands are involved with the body's response and defence to stress. They also influence the body's metabolism, blood chemicals, and body characteristics with the hormones they produce.
Hypothalamus
Control body's functions that are involuntary through the nervous system. Example: appetite and sleep
Ovaries and testicles
Important for sexual development as they influence female and male characteristics
Pancreas
Controls glucose in body by producing insulin
Parathyroid glands
Help maintain calcium in body
Pineal body
Involved with daily biological cycles such as feeling of sleepiness
Pituitary gland
Controls secretion of hormones that influence entire endocrine system
Thymus gland
Produces hormones that stimulate development of antibodies
Thyroid gland
Crucial in body's metabolism (the releasing of energy from nutrient or the use of energy to create other proteins and substances). Also produces hormones that stimulate several parts of the body.
